Somebody ought to teach these Flat Earth morons about Occam’s Razor…

This is hilarious. I’m copying and pasting the meme and quoted text from this Facebook photo

Generally, those who ask before researching raise questions based on ignorance of the true Earth model. This image illustrates one of these questions.

No, flying straight will not make anyone end up “in space”, first of all because space doesn’t exist. In addition to the ice circle (known as Antarctica), there are boundaries of the Firmament which are the side walls of the dome. The center of the plane is north, following clockwise direction is west and following counterclockwise direction is east. No planes have any routes that go beyond Antarctica where they could run the risk of hitting the dome. All plane routes are within the dome. If a plane “flies straight” it will follow a compass that will just make it follow clockwise or counterclockwise above the plane and inside the dome.

Now, if we had actually been living on a ball in a vacuum, a plane flying straight would indeed go off into “space”… but it’s good thing that there are magical forces like “gravity” to bail out space-fiction fans and keep their planes going upside-down around a ball. Logic? Forget it. There are theories that explain it away!

Their “logic” is insane. Space doesn’t exist. Satellites aren’t real. Instead we have a dome and a ring of ice around a flat planet.

My comment to them (and I don’t care to read their reply) was this:

So how do satellites, and thus GPS technology, work? Magic? Like Uber has a secret contract with Jesus and he powers their maps?

You realize if you believe this crap, it excludes you from a whole bunch of normal jobs that intelligent people do.

But even if we pretend the problems of satellites and GPS technology don’t exist, and accept that GPS should have been called JPS for Jesus Positioning System, and actually read what they’re claiming, they still have problems… According to their logic, the Earth looks flat; therefore it is flat. (That’s what it comes down to really. That’s what the Flat Earth belief system is about, until you involve religion.) But, and try to get your head around this strange bit of nonsense that’s so contrived and complex it violates the very premise (simplistic thinking) of their belief… when you fly a plane dead straight, you actually go around in circles.

And that’s where Occam’s Razor comes in. The simpler explanation for something is generally correct. In this case, in order for their logic to make sense, they redefine flying straight to mean to fly around in circles. That’s right, without angling the plane, but by flying dead straight, somehow you end up going round and round in a circle, sideways. This redefinition is necessary because otherwise they’d have to explain why nobody flies into the magic dome. If your logic includes making shit up to explain why things don’t work the way you’d like them to work, well, I don’t need to elaborate, do I?

Also, for no planes to follow routes that involve crashing into their imaginary dome, AKA firmament, there needs to be an enormous conspiracy, and a whole bunch of people working for air traffic control need to be colluding to hide the “truth” of the flat Earth. Not to mention everybody who understands how GPS – Global Positioning System – works.

I’ve read that people who believe in conspiracies are actually intelligent, and believing conspiracies makes them feel safer somehow – safer because there are people out there in control. It’s not all chaos. But I struggle to accept that anybody who believes the earth is flat can be intelligent in any way. They can’t be.

  1. Indeed, this is hilarious. And tragic. At the same time.

Religiosity IS a mental and/or cognitive disorder. (or rather a variety of mental and/or cognitive disorders).

    Halleluiah, Jerome!

    Amen!

    1. Thanks. I appreciate it. I always enjoy your comments… I don’t get many comments here, except on the post about meth voices, which seems to have a life of its own. So I appreciate the comments that do come…

      1. I’m guilty of finding this blog through a meth related Google search. I’ve been up for a week and my back/jaw are incredibly tense and I found your lesser known side effects post. Interesting stuff that I can personally attest to is all true and the scary part is you’re just scratching the surface. You’ll experience the whole gamut of weird inexplicable and downright unpleasant effects. I have a livejournal post where I catalog all sorts of bodily aches/pains/weird recurring thoughts/signs of cognitive decline/etc etc etc.

To be honest though I’ve found that this kind of stuff is attributable to 3 things, not eating, not sleeping, and using in excess. There was a point where I cut my usage down to 100mg a day plugged and I began to sleep and eat like a normal person and felt perfectly fine.

The part about meth users having scattered, displaced energy is so true and so funny to me. Some users are so deluded that they think they’re actually being more efficient, or are more attractive, or the chemical has some kind of mystical power, or, and this is my favorite one, that once a user stays up for 4-5+ days they start to reach a higher plane of consciousness and shadow people and chakras and aligned with God and man I’ve read some off the wall shit from these idiotic rambling meth users… if you want evidence that meth rots your brain, just open any bluelight or drugs-forum meth threads. It might do some of these things in the very short term, but it’s going to catch up with you so fast and make you dumber, uglier, and slower. You’ll pay back in spades anything meth gives to you now, later.

Meth gives you energy only in the sense that it makes you engrossed and interested in whatever it is you are doing. Case in point, this reply was only intended to be one paragraph long. I’m ashamed to say this is classic tweaker shit, although it’s usually formatted as one long run on sentence with no structure or organization of any kind and about abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

Anyway, nice blog Jerome! Will be back. 🙂

        1. Haha, at least you didn’t write one long run-on sentence and your grammar was fine. Coherent anyway. Not that it means much though… I wrote my old blog (which I took down) and it was quite popular at the time, between 2011 and 2013, even though I wrote it while high.

I also did OK at work, at least in 2012 to 2013, because I cut down the amount I used. But my priorities were all wrong.

    1. Well, since I know that those who believe in conspiracies have a tendency to believe in them even when they contradict each other, I like to ask the flat earthers if any of them believe the earth is both flat and hollow.

If I understand the hollow earth “theory” correctly, there’s an entrance to it in the Arctic, guarded by NASA and the armies of the US? And if you go in there, there’s another solar system with a sun in the middle? Or something like that? So I guess my grade 9 biology teacher, who told us all about going there on scientific expeditions back in the day, must have been lying and was part of the conspiracy? Maybe he was a reptilian?

        1. Research how volcanoes work, and what results in the discharge of magma on the surface. If you can understand that the planet is filled with molten magma, which is magnetic, and understand how that is being churned due to the spinning of the planet, you can understand how the planet has a magnetic field. This field is the only reason why solar radiation has not blasted the atmosphere away. (As opposed to Mars, which cooled down and doesn’t have much of an atmosphere left.)

If you can understand that, then it follows logically that the Earth can’t be hollow. That’s without even considering what would be required to hide the hollow Earth from everybody. And for what reason? Conspiracies like this don’t make sense. You don’t have to go to the Arctic to realize the conspiracy is nonsense.

          1. I’ll look into the volcanic influence, after all they are used in many (if not all) “hollow” stories.
In the mean time I have come across this little tid bit of information:
***Temperature affects magnetism. A magnet subjected to intense heat experiences a reduction in its magnetic field. If the same magnet is exposed to low temperatures, its magnetism is increased.***
I guess it doesn’t work the same way for Earth’s magnetic field. I’m no scientist, all I can do is look at the facts/fallacies of other peoples work.

    1. I was going to comment that sarcastically, actually, but decided not to…

So do you believe in the Hollow Earth theory, or are you just fascinated by the conspiracy and the beliefs, like me?

      1. “this” particular theory (solar system/sun) has its problems. Hollow Earth? Well… there are caves both natural and man-made (vast caves) to be sure.
Let’s say, I am open to the idea, but then Flat Earth also has some merit. *** And at the end of the day, it’s all very fascinating.

        But who knows?

        1. The statement is true, since we live in our own virtual world in our heads, created by our senses interpreting the world around us.

You should probably look for a better quote than one from fiction though… 🙂

            1. I think you;re taking a bit of a stretch there. Our own senses mean we interact with a limited view of reality, as we perceive it, but that doesn’t mean crazy conspiracies that run contrary to the observations of … never mind. I’m not here to argue.

              You win.

              1. Occams Razor: a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities.
